At Liberty Multimedia Inc., we have proudly collaborated with Elizabeth Metis Settlement (EMS) to address pressing housing needs while ensuring that our solutions are sustainable, energy-efficient, and inclusive. Through initiatives like the Canada Greener Homes Grant (GHG), the National Housing Co-Investment Fund (NHCF), and the Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF), we are transforming the Settlement’s housing landscape, meeting critical needs, and advancing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Energy Efficiency Solutions: The Canada Greener Homes Grant (GHG)
The Canada Greener Homes Grant has been pivotal in supporting energy-efficient home retrofits across the 202 homes in Elizabeth Metis Settlement. Through this initiative, the Settlement has secured up to $5,600 per home to cover retrofits such as insulation upgrades, air sealing, and renewable energy installations. These retrofits are not only reducing household energy consumption but are also aligned with Canada’s goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
Since the program began, energy assessments for over 178 homes have been completed, identifying key areas for improvement. High-priority upgrades include the installation of energy-efficient doors and windows, upgraded insulation, and the replacement of old heating systems. These improvements are expected to result in a minimum 25% reduction in energy consumption per home. By lowering energy costs and making homes more sustainable, the program supports both environmental sustainability and social equity.
ESG Criteria: National Housing Co-Investment Fund (NHCF)
The National Housing Co-Investment Fund (NHCF) has been instrumental in furthering EMS’s housing renewal efforts. With a $765,000 contribution, this fund is supporting the repair and renewal of 51 homes over the next three years, ensuring they meet high energy efficiency standards and remain accessible to vulnerable populations.
A significant aspect of this project is the focus on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria. These retrofits aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 25% across the portfolio of homes, promoting long-term sustainability. Additionally, the project emphasizes social inclusivity, with a portion of the homes being reserved for women and children, and at least 20% of units being made accessible. These goals align with ESG best practices, ensuring that the homes are environmentally friendly and socially equitable and inclusive.
Sustainable Development Goals: Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF)
The Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF), introduced by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), is designed to increase housing supply while promoting sustainability and affordability. EMS has received $850,000 in funding to accelerate the construction and retrofit of homes, focusing on energy-efficient and climate-resilient housing solutions.
Through this initiative, EMS aims to construct 43 new green homes by 2026, using modular and prefabricated housing techniques. These homes will meet strict energy efficiency standards, reducing carbon footprints and ensuring long-term climate resilience. Additionally, the HAF has enabled EMS to improve critical housing-related infrastructure, such as water and wastewater systems, aligning with both SDG 6 (clean water and sanitation) and SDG 11 (sustainable cities and communities).
The Impact of Energy-Efficient Housing on Elizabeth Metis Settlement
These retrofits and new construction projects, supported by the Greener Homes Grant, NHCF, and HAF, are having a profound impact on the environmental and social landscape of Elizabeth Metis Settlement. Through these initiatives, EMS is reducing its carbon footprint while ensuring that vulnerable populations have access to safe, affordable, and sustainable housing. These projects align with broader sustainable development goals, demonstrating that energy-efficient housing can drive both climate action and social equity.
By upgrading homes to meet energy efficiency standards and building new units that are designed to withstand climate challenges, EMS is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable Settlement development. This work improves the quality of life for current members and lays the foundation for a more resilient future.
