Pioneering Sustainability: Toward Net Zero and the Alberta Indigenous Solar Program

At Liberty Multimedia Inc., we take great pride in our role in fostering sustainable energy solutions in collaboration with Indigenous communities. Our work with the Paddle Prairie Metis Settlement (PPMS) through the Toward Net Zero (TNZ) Initiative and the Alberta Indigenous Solar Program (AISP) has been a shining example of how renewable energy projects can transform communities while reducing carbon footprints and promoting energy efficiency.

Renewable Energy Projects: Toward Net Zero (TNZ) Initiative

The Toward Net Zero (TNZ) project in Paddle Prairie is a groundbreaking initiative supported by Natural Resources Canada. With a $421,918 grant, this initiative aims to build seven Net-Zero ready homes in the settlement, setting a new standard for energy-efficient housing. The homes will incorporate cutting-edge technologies like triple-pane windows, advanced insulation, and solar energy systems, which will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The energy efficiency of these homes is measured through the Energy Performance Tiers outlined in the National Energy Code for Buildings (NECB) 2020. Each tier represents a progressive level of energy savings, with Tier 5 being the highest, requiring buildings to use 60% less energy than a typical home. These homes aim to meet today’s housing needs and also promote long-term sustainability by reducing energy consumption and supporting self-reliance through educational workshops.

Community Involvement and Capacity Building

One of the core elements of the TNZ project is its focus on community engagement and capacity building. Members of Paddle Prairie are directly involved in the project through workshops on energy-efficient construction, sustainable living, and home maintenance. These workshops, which include topics like life skills and energy efficiency management, empower community members to maintain their homes while understanding the broader impact of sustainability on their daily lives.

Moreover, local labour is actively involved in the construction process, providing job opportunities and training in renewable energy technologies. The combination of job creation and skills development helps foster economic growth within the settlement, making the initiative environmentally and economically sustainable.

Alberta Indigenous Solar Program (AISP): Leading the Way in Solar Energy

The Alberta Indigenous Solar Program (AISP) was a significant milestone in Paddle Prairie’s journey towards renewable energy. The first phase of the project saw the installation of four grid-tied solar panel systems at key community buildings: the arena, day care, library, and youth center. These solar systems are already delivering tangible benefits to the community, including reduced energy costs and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

For example, the 20kW solar system installed at the Paddle Prairie arena generated over 8.3 MW of energy and offset more than 8,900 kg of CO2 emissions in its first two months. This success story is an example of the energy efficiency solutions provided by AISP and a catalyst for future renewable energy projects in Northern Alberta.

Long-Term Impact and Sustainability Consulting

Both the TNZ and AISP initiatives exemplify the long-term impact of sustainability consulting and renewable energy projects in Indigenous communities. By incorporating energy efficiency solutions like solar power and net-zero housing, these programs have laid the foundation for a more resilient and self-sustaining community.

The success of these projects has been made possible through strategic partnerships and extensive consultation with stakeholders like Communitas and Armstrong Builders, which helped to align project goals with both environmental and community needs. In addition to the energy savings, the projects have fostered a greater awareness of climate stewardship and environmental responsibility among Paddle Prairie residents, further cementing the Settlement’s role as a leader in sustainability.

The Future of Sustainable Communities

As we look to the future, the lessons learned from Toward Net Zero and AISP offer a roadmap for other Indigenous and remote communities. By prioritizing renewable energy projects and energy-efficient housing, we can build communities that meet the immediate housing needs and contribute to broader environmental and economic goals. The collaboration between Liberty Multimedia, Paddle Prairie, and other stakeholders stands as a testament to the power of sustainability consulting and the impact of thoughtful, community-driven renewable energy projects.
